One is the sound: Her daughter finds that the volume can be a little low when she uses it to speak in a crowded area. Another potential weakness is... its weakness. While relatively sturdy, it's not as sturdy as a communication board that's been specifically designed for special needs populations. Bearing in mind that Amazon's untested Cloudfront is supposed to make up for the lack of storage, and you can see the huge price difference might not be worth paying.

It's not that hard - just offer a similar experience to AirDrop, the file sharing system that will appear in OS X Lion. There should be no reason that our iPads go music-less because we forgot to plug them in every evening.


-Where is the Retina screen?
The iPhone 4 with the retina screen was a game-changer. It's still perceived as the best mobile screen on the market eight months later. The iPad's screen is nice, sure, but so are the incoming Honeycomb tablets'. They're close enough that fanboys of either faction can argue endlessly at their merits. The iPad 2 IPS screen is nice, but it's far from a retina display. Let's hope iPad 3 will have that high-rez screen we keep hearing about. Come on!

Will the iPad get broken?

It is always a risk giving anything to a 4 Year old, you know, they really haven't got any idea of value at that age, despite them saying they do. In the 6 months that I have been allowing free use of an iPad, unsupervised most of the time, it has always come back in 1 piece, working just as it should. Sometime a bit sticky, but fine otherwise.

I must say that I did invest in an iPad case, the Cheapest iPad case that Apple sell. It's really good too.

I can remember just 1 occasion where I said to my little boy; "Don't drop it now", "OK". He made out that he understood by nodding his head, then dropping it on the floor. Amused. No. iPad OK? Yes.

Don't forget to turn on the Application Lock in the Settings Menu, to stop any "In App" purchases.

The Pirate Treasure Hunt iPad App

The Pirate Treasure hunt is a Free App, but you would never believe it; it is available on the App Store. It has almost everything, and even without being perfect this game has both my kids entranced for hours at a time, over and over.

What it's got;

Education in various forms from Basic Spelling to Simple Arithmetic and more.
Plenty to do and think about.
Simple understandable questions.
A great Story.

When you first use the Pirate Treasure Hunt app you will notice how well laid out the Map is, how clever the use of characters pull your child into the game; but make no mistake, this game will help your child learn to recognise letters, words and numbers.

8 Challenges are offered to the player; I'll let you know about a couple, so as to not spoil the fun;

One challenge is to save the captain by find 4 letter words to rescue him from the tree, my Son and Daughter both love this, and in the beginning it was a great way of introducing the iPad to them.

In another of the challenges the player must place bags of gunpowder onto a scale, to set how far a cannon ball will fly and even though it looks really simple to you, it still even after 200 hundred attempts keeps both my kids occupied.

It's colorful, well thought out and plays so well you will be amazed.

The only thing that lets this game down is its lack of variety. My kids don't seem to care at all and will play it over and over again, plus being a free App it is obviously very hard to complain, however it is such a shame that expansion packs are not available for it. There is so much more that could be done with it.

I would recommend this App to anyone thinking of introducing their young kids to the iPad.

Build a Train

The Build a Train app is another Free App, again available from the App store.

If Thomas the Tank Engine is on your youngsters hit list then this App will keep them playing for ages. With the game allowing the train to consist of a number of different types of Engine and Carriage. You child will be able to navigate the train around a pre-planned track using only the signals to change the trains course. The idea is to pick up parcels from one station and, using the correct signals, change the points to get the train to the delivery truck.

There are lots of extra tracks available to download on top of the Free tracks, and a few extra touches such as a Whilst to sound and a Speed control all make the game play for ever. Did I mention the Tunnels?

I think I should leave them to your 4 Year old...

What can I say, yet another FREE App to keep your children occupied for hours. The Toy Story Read Along Book is available on the App Store, it is a free download; it does come with some "extras" to attempt to get some of your hard earned pennies. You do not need to buy them of course.

This does exactly what it says on the Tin, it reads a reasonable long Toy Story related story to your Child; They can in fact either read it themselves or have it read aloud for them. It has pictures that change to match the words.

Since I purchased an Apple iPad about 6 months ago, I have with absolutely zero regard for its safety let my 3 and 4 year old play with it, sometimes for hours on end. I have both an iPad and a laptop computer. I use them everyday. I wouldn't trade in my laptop for an iPad, but I certainly wouldn't want to do without my iPad now that I have it.

I was asked a question the other day, "What can an iPad do that Laptop cannot?"

It's a great question and I've been thinking about it a lot. I have a bunch of answers, so read on my friend and hear my views on why you should have this Shiny (not a) Toy.

Durability

I have not had the best of luck with laptops. It seems that I am not that graceful. I've replaced more hard drives on laptops than I've had manicures I'm sure. The beauty of the iPad is that it has flash memory. That's solid state, no moving parts. So if, for some reason, I should accidentally spike it onto the library floor (not that I've ever done that mind you) my hard drive wouldn't crater.

For someone as charming, but graceless, as I am, this is a huge check mark in the plus column.

Portability

I have 3 e-book apps on my iPad; Kindle, Kobo and of course iBooks. I read 12 books in 3 weeks when I first got it. I would never read 12 books on my laptop, I wouldn't even read one. I can't imagine curling up in bed to read on my laptop. Or to watch TV for that matter (I'm making my way through The Tudors on Netflix now). My laptop gets slow and cranky streaming video, but my iPad is so smooth, and portable, did I mention it's portable?

It's really portable. Last time I went for a haircut I took it with me so the kids could finish their Monopoly game while I was getting washed and trimmed. I would never do that with my laptop.

Creativity

I don't use my laptop to fingerpaint (the screen would never be the same) but I can do that on the iPad. I have painted some amazing things on my iPad, doodled some too. I take it with me when I take the kids to swimming lessons and make fun little sketches while I'm waiting for them. Some of them are good enough to put in my Cafe Press shop.

There are more art apps for the iPad than I can name here. I've only tried 10 so far.

Peace of Mind

And finally there is economics, my iPad cost me $500 and my MacBook air cost me $1400. When I choose which one I'm going to schlep back and forth on the train to school, I would rather take the less expensive (and very functional) one knowing that if something really horrific happened I could replace it more easily than my laptop. Also because it syncs to my lap top all the work I do is still safe and sound at home.

My iPad doesn't replace my laptop, it doesn't do everything. It almost does, but for lots of typing and editing the laptop is still king. That being said, I can't imagine not having it now that I do have it.

One other workaround that will let you play Facebook games on an iPad is using a remote desktop app. This way, you are remote controlling your desktop computer with your iPad, and the Flash is running on the computer not the iPad.

These are the Remote Desktop Apps I've tried so far: (only one so far--if I try other Remote Desktop apps, I'll update this.)
Splashtop Remote Desktop for iPad - This was easy to get up and running by installing a client on my PC, then my iPad found my computer on the local network and I was able to connect to it after putting in my password. I haven't tried connecting to it outside of the home, or using 3G yet.

I was able to play some Facebook games using Splashtop Remote Desktop, but it wasn't as smooth of an experience as using iSwifter. It could be because my computer is a few years old. I liked that with Gardens of Time (Hidden object game) I was able to zoom in by using two fingers to expand or pinch, as you can't zoom in using iSwifter.

It streams flash content to your device from a cloud, so the Flash is running on the cloud and not on your iPad. It's the best workaround I've found so far for playing Flash games on an iPad. Currently, it only works over wi-fi but they have plans for future 3G support.

You can install iSwifter for free, but it's not really a free app. When I first tried iSwifter, it was free to install but it would let you play for 5 minutes and then cut you off. Now it seems they have a 7 day trial. Also, when I purchased iSwifter there was a one time upgrade fee of $2.99. iSwifter has changed to a subscription model where you'll have to pay $2.99 a month to continue using it. I feel lucky I purchased it when I did since I won't have to pay the monthly fee since it switched to the subscription model after I purchased it.

A few of the games I tested using iSwifter that it seemed to work okay with are: Cityville, Gardens of Time, Monopoly Millionaires, Farkle, and Pet Society (although running a race in Pet Society is a little laggy and sometimes it's slow to use the arrow to go to another part of a room). Unfortunately, iSwifter does not work well for playing my favorite Facebook game, Zuma Blitz, on the iPad. The frog would shoot balls in the wrong direction and I also couldn't figure out how to right click to swap to a different colored ball. To effectively play Zuma Blitz on an iPad, I will just have to wait until Popcap makes a Zuma Blitz app for the iPad like they did with Bejeweled Blitz. I have no idea if or when that will happen though. I think that most Facebook games will probably work using iSwifter on the iPad, unless they are fast paced games like Zuma Blitz.

iSwifter does have a few annoyances--it doesn't seem to use cookies so if you use it to play Facebook games, you'll have to login to Facebook each time you open the app (even if you check the box for it to remember you.). It also doesn't remember where you were when you close the app. I was playing a Facebook game and accidently pressed the button on my iPad and the app closed, then when I reopened iSwifter, I had to log in to Facebook again.

You can Bookmark Facebook apps using iSwifter, but I like to go to Facebook first using a secure connection and log in, then I go to the bookmark for the game I want to play.
