iPad vs PC's

iPad

The iPad is Apple's latest offering is on sale now. The iPad was introduced by Steve Jobs during the keynote address at the 2010 Macworld event. There was a lot of speculation that Apple would be unveiling a Mac tablet which would run the same operating system as the Mac's and Macbooks. The iPad was introduced and immediately it was apparent this was not a Mac Tablet but a larger version of the Ipod Touch or Iphone. Indeed it looked like a large Ipod Touch and it runs the same operating system. So what does this new gadget have to offer?

The iPad will have a high-resolution, 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display. The iPad will show your photos, videos and the web in portrait or landscape orientation. And because it uses a display technology called IPS (in-plane switching), it has a wide, 178° viewing angle. The Multi-Touch screen on iPad is based on the same technology used on the Ipod Touch and the iPhone. But the technology has been completely reengineered for the larger iPad surface.

The iPad is thin and light. The screen is 9.7 inches measured diagonally. This is just slightly smaller than a magazine. It will weight 1.5 pounds and be 0.5 inch thin. To maximize battery life, Apple engineers took the same lithium-polymer battery technology they developed for Mac notebook computers and applied it to the iPad. As a result, you can use iPad for up to 10 hours while surfing the web on Wi-Fi, watching videos, or listening to music. This is yet to be proven however. The iPod Touch has a very long battery life while surfing the web, watching videos or listening to music. However once you start playing with Apps, especially graphic intensive games the battery drains quickly. Hopefully this will not be the case with the iPad.

The iPad will have two wireless options, built-in 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR technology. In addition you can have have 3G however this will require you to pay for the access through a cell company which at this time will be AT&T. The heart of the iPad is the A4 chip designed by Apple engineers. It combines power and efficiency which helps the iPad get 10 hours out of the battery.

The iPad will be available with a choice of 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB of flash storage. The iPad will have a30-pin connector on the bottom of the iPad allows you to dock and charge it. This connector will also allow accessories such as the upcoming camera connector and the keyboard to connect to the iPad. There will also be a built in speaker and microphone as well as a headphone jack. The iPad will run Apps from the Itunes store and if you already have purchased Apps for you Ipod Touch or Iphone you will be able to run them on the iPad as well.

So which one is for me?

So which one is for you? The Tablet PC will be a full fledge computer. You can do everything the iPad can with the exception of Apps. Apps are small programs made for the iPad. Currently there are over 150,000 on the Itunes store. Many of these are free. Some charge as little as $1.00 and the more expensive Apps cost between $6.99 and $9.99.

Apps will determine just how much the iPad will truly be able to do for you. Given time more and more Apps will be out there increasing the iPad's functionality. The Tablet PC will be able to run thousands of programs some of which you may already own.

The iPad looks like it is set to fill in between netbooks and laptops. The Ipod Touch and Iphone are great products and enjoy a large following. The iPad is a larger version of the Ipod Touch and should be a great gadget. With the upcoming Apps that are being written for it there will be new uses for it all the time.
